The Planter's is a fine dining restaurant overlooking the hotel's infinity pool The Danna Langkawi and the Andaman Sea. In addition to the extensive breakfast for hotel guests, in the evening there is a wide range of Mediterranean, European-inspired and local dishes with an emphasis on quality, style and presentation.
The open kitchen allows the guest to look over the chef's shoulder while the dishes are being prepared. One thing to note is that for both breakfast and dinner, the dress code is smart casual.
Breakfast at The Planter's restaurant
Every morning we looked forward to this magnificent breakfast. At the beginning you get a menu with various egg dishes, such as Eggs Benedict, omelets or scrambled eggs, and also sweets such as pancakes or waffles that are offered. The offer varies daily. All tea or coffee drinks are also brought to your seat. A highlight is certainly the champagne that is served at breakfast. It turned out to be sparkling wine, but in the English language the subtle difference is not seen so narrowly.
In addition to the egg dishes, which are served at your seat, you can help yourself from the rich buffet. There is an Asian buffet (rice, noodles, curries, dim sum, sushi, etc.) and an intercontinental buffet with many different types of bread, cold cuts, cheese, muesli, lots of fruit, yoghurt, jam, peanut butter and so on. We were perfectly happy and it tasted just fabulous.
If it gets crowded at breakfast, this is not noticeable due to the individually separated rooms and several large pillars, which absorb the volume. A piano player also plays to underline the ambience. Also are in the restaurant The Plannedr’s again enough service staff tried to refill the buffet and take away used dishes quickly.
Dinner at The Planter's restaurant
The dim lighting and piano music create the setting for dinner at The Planter's restaurant a great atmosphere. You can order either à la carte or a menu. We chose the menus - a four course and a special Malaysian menu. Prices are cheaper than expected for a 5 star hotel. Even in the evening, main courses only cost between 50 – 90 MYR (12 – 22 EUR) on average.
Four course meal - Easter Set Dinner
After we were escorted to the table, the waiter introduced himself and addressed us by name. He was also informed about our previously stated allergies and checked with us again.
Then we were given the menu and wine list. The wine list features a variety of red and white wines from Australia, New Zealand and France. I opted for an Australian white wine, which was served with perfect service in a slightly chilled glass. Christin got a very tasty fruit punch, which unfortunately was a bit too sweet.
The menu began quite traditionally with an amuse-gueule. We then had three starters to choose from: mango-papaya salad with king prawns, a trio of tuna, salmon and red snapper sashimi with blood orange, or a beef carpaccio with bean salad. Christin opted for the prawns and I tried the sashimi. Neither of us were disappointed.
The second course was a consommé with shiitake dumplings. The dumplings were poured from a pot directly at the table. Class!
For the main course, Christin stayed true to the sea creatures and chose filet from a local fish with roasted pumpkin, grilled asparagus and lettuce. I chose the Australian tenderloin steak with potatoes and asparagus. The meat was perfectly medium rare as requested.
We were already full, but of course there was still room for dessert. We got a lime tart wrapped in a wafer-thin layer of sugar, served with mascarpone mango jelly and traditional carrot cake. Coffee and small Easter treats were served.
Malaysian Dinner – Tiffin Dinner
On our second night at The Danna Langkawi, we decided to have a Malaysian dinner. This is served as a tiffin set. This tradition actually comes from India and describes a kind of packed lunch, which is prepared especially for working men by their wives and then delivered to them at work. In Mumbai, this is done by so-called dabbawalas, who use a complex system to forward thousands of Tiffin boxes to their destination.
To accompany the dinner we ordered another fruit punch for Christin, this time not so sweet and fruity, a bottle of mineral water and for me a New Zealand Merlot from Clearwater Cove (2013). As an amuse-gueule there was tuna on a small ratatouille tonight.
As a starter, there was an oxtail soup with cloves and strong broth. Then we were presented with the main course. It consisted of four stacked enamel pots with different curries: chicken, beef, prawns and tofu. The chicken curry was runnier and slightly sweet. Unfortunately the chicken was a bit over cooked. Christine's absolute favorite was the curry with prawns. This was not so sharp, since she is very sensitive. The beef curry was nice and creamy and pleasantly spicy. For me the best of the evening.
At the end of our Tiffin Dinner I ordered another coffee. This was served with warm milk in a jug. Just the way I like it.

Summary
We can warmly recommend the Tiffin Dinner to every guest of the restaurant. It gives a great insight into local cuisine for travelers who don't necessarily want to eat at the food stalls. The cost is MYR 180 for two people.
