Lufthansa Premium Economy in the Airbus A330-300 to Dubai

How did we book our flight?

Booking with award miles is cheap, but it's important to know that in addition to the miles, there are also taxes and fees. In our case, these additional costs amounted to around 1000 euros. These fees depend on the type of booking and may vary depending on the destination, airline and route. They cover various aspects of air service, including security fees, airport fees and fuel surcharges.

Arrival in Frankfurt

After our feeder flight from Leipzig with a Bombardier CRJ-1000 (operated by Air Nostrum), a long walk from Terminal 1A to Terminal 1B, we went to the Lufthansa Senator Lounge B (Lounge Review). With a warm lunch and a Moscow Mule, the hour-long stay flew by. Fifteen minutes before departure we packed our things and made our way to our departure gate B33.

Note: Unfortunately, the Lufthansa Premium Economy travel price does not include lounge access. Because of my frequent flyer status, we were allowed to visit the Senator Lounge at Frankfurt Airport.

Boarding flight LH630 to Dubai

When we arrived at Gate B33, a bus gate, there was a certain amount of chaos. The waiting area was far too small for the number of passengers. We fought our way with our son to the boarding pass check and were let through immediately. After folding up our stroller, we walked down to the bus. After another 5 minutes of waiting, it finally started moving. The Lufthansa A330-300 (registration D-AIKO) was at apron position V166.

What is the cabin and seat like in Lufthansa Premium Economy on the Airbus A330-300?

Since we were taken to the apron on the first bus to the A330 thanks to priority boarding, we were almost the first on board. This meant I was able to explore the Lufthansa Premium Economy Class cabin undisturbed. Since the cabin was still largely unoccupied, I had the opportunity to photograph the details and amenities of this premium class without disturbing other passengers.

You are also not entitled to priority boarding in Lufthansa Premium Economy Class. You board as normal with economy class passengers if you don't have frequent flyer status.

Lufthansa's Premium Economy cabin extended from row 15 to row 19 and was spatially positioned behind the smaller of the two business class compartments. The Premium Economy was arranged in a comfortable 2-3-2 configuration in the four rows of seats. This meant that there was one less seat in each row than in economy class, allowing for a generous amount of seating. In total, Premium Economy offered 28 comfortable seats, which were only separated from Economy Class by a discreet sign, but represented a noticeable upgrade in terms of comfort and feeling of space.

But where is the best seat in Lufthansa Premium Economy on the Airbus A330? The best seats are in row 15 and therefore in the first row of Premium Economy. There is enough legroom directly behind the partition wall to Business Class and you can stand up comfortably without disturbing the passenger in the next seat.

We sat in the middle in seats 16D to E. There was already a blanket, a pillow, simple headphones and a small amenity kit on the gray fabric seat. I found the seat very comfortable. It was very well padded and much wider than an economy class seat. The distance between the seats was approximately 97 cm, so that I could put my legs on top of each other without any problems (given a height of 1.83 m). The headrest was adjustable and the wide center armrests offered every passenger sufficient comfort and space. The backrest could be tilted very far back (tilt angle approx. 130°). When the backrest was adjusted, the seat also moved forward, which increased comfort slightly.

Each seat had its own power and USB port. The 110V socket was located in the lower part of the armrest and the USB port was integrated into the monitor. The center armrest also contained the table, which did not fold out as usual, but was made in one piece and was very stable. This is a really good place to work or eat. Each seat also had a holder for a water bottle (integrated into the front seat) and a shelf for newspapers, magazines or the security card.

Was gibt es in der Lufthansa Premium Economy in der Airbus A330-300 zu essen & trinken?

At each Lufthansa Premium Economy seat upon boarding there was a bottle of still water and a small amenity kit from the French fashion company Cerruti 1881. This contained a toothbrush, a sleep mask, earplugs, a towel and a pair of simple gray socks.

After boarding was successfully completed, we were warmly welcomed with a refreshing welcome drink. Served in a simple plastic cup, a refreshing orange juice with a hint of mint awaited us. No alternative was offered, but the juice was really tasty.

After the start there was a round of drinks, this time with alcohol. For lunch we had the same choice in Lufthansa Premium Economy as in Economy Class. The big difference was that, unlike guests in economy, we were able to make our choice from a printed menu.

After the start there was a round of drinks, this time with alcohol. For lunch we had the same choice in Lufthansa Premium Economy as in Economy Class. As a starter there was a seasonal salad with sun-dried tomato strips and Italian dressing. For the main course we had the choice between beef strips in sweet and sour sauce on orzo risoni with diced vegetables or yellow penne in wild garlic sauce. I chose the beef strips and was very happy with my choice. For dessert, at least according to the menu, there was a crème brûlée with almond brittle. It was delicious, but the consistency was more like vanilla pudding! For dinner I chose a German Riesling, this time by the glass, and a water.

There was a second service about 80 minutes before landing. You had the choice between a slice of brown bread with cheese, as is served on short flights, or a wrap with pastrami. Since I had already eaten a few brown breads on my frequent short-haul business flights in Europe, I decided on the wrap this time. The taste was okay.

Our son received a children's menu for both meals, which we had previously ordered online. At this point we would like to give a big shout out to the flight attendants who individually brought him the food between the two servings.

In summary, the service during the flight was very attentive. We definitely didn't lack for drinks. However, I found it a shame that the light in the cabin was dimmed almost the entire time, making it very dark in the cabin for a daytime flight.

How is the in-flight entertainment in Lufthansa Premium Economy on the Airbus A330-300?

The personal entertainment screen in the front seat back is approximately 12 inches. It can be operated either via the remote control or the touchscreen. In Premium Economy, Lufthansa offers the same selection of films, series, music and games as in all other classes. Personally, I found the offer completely sufficient.

Like many Lufthansa aircraft, this Airbus A330-300 is also equipped with WiFi, to which you can purchase access via the FlyNet portal. Internet access was a bit too expensive for us for the 6-hour flight at 29 euros, so we can't say anything about speed and availability.

Summary

Anyone who has previously only flown long-haul in Economy Class will be thrilled by Premium Economy. The seats are very well padded and very comfortable thanks to the high angle of inclination. If you want to sleep well on a night flight, you should prefer the more expensive business class. In my opinion, the food still needs improvement. Here, apart from the porcelain tableware, a difference from Economy Class would be a great upgrade!

The fact that premium economy is not completely separated from economy seems to me to be typically German. So that privileged status can be directly asserted in front of the less privileged. Since the envy factor is directly inevitable. But Lufthansa has now phased out the A 330 anyway, it was probably not a successful model, who is surprised?
