SWISS Avro RJ100 Economy Class, Zurich to Dresden

SWISS BAe 146 / Avro RJ100 - MSN 3379 - HB-IYU

According to our Arrival from Singapore We arrived at 6:30 am. SWISS We headed to the Senator Lounge. Luckily, there was no waiting list for the showers, which are located in the Business Lounge. After the refreshing shower, we swapped our comfortable jogging pants for jeans and quickly brushed our teeth. Now we were perfectly prepared for the rest of the day – the best feature of Star Alliance Gold status. We grabbed a quick breakfast of croissant, banana, and cappuccino and set off around 7:00 a.m. for Gate A54 – a bus gate. Our SWISS Avro RJ100 was already waiting there.

On the bus, we thought the flight to Dresden would be very sparsely booked today. But when we arrived at the remote stand, we noticed that at least a whole busload of passengers had already boarded the plane. So it turned out to be quite crowded after all.

We deliberately booked our flight to Dresden to add a new airport to our statistics and, more importantly, to fly on a soon-to-be-retired aircraft type, the Avro RJ100. SWISS plans to replace the small "Jumbolinos" with the new Bombardier CSeries 100s soon. This was therefore one of our last chances to fly within Europe on a four-engine aircraft. After boarding via the small staircase, we took our seats 12A and 12B, which are located directly under the wings.

We took off from lift 28 at 7:28. The weather was fantastic, so after takeoff we had a great view of Lake Zurich and the Alps in the background. As we gained altitude, the clouds thickened and the magnificent view was gone.

Shortly after the seatbelt signs were switched off, a small breakfast was served: chocolate croissant, coffee and water.

An hour after our departure from Zurich, we landed in Dresden at 8:35 a.m. The fantastic weather must have been clever and stayed in Switzerland – Dresden greeted us with grey skies and colder temperatures. The only bright spot was the famous Swiss chocolate.

Where is our suitcase?

Thanks to the priority tag, one of our suitcases was the first on the conveyor belt. After quite some time, there was still no sign of the second one. Just then, the announcement came: "...please report to the immigration area!" Our second suitcase was still in Zurich and would be delivered to our home by a shipping company. The only problem was that it was the wrong one that got "caught." That suitcase contained our jackets, sweaters, and drinks. So now we had to take the train back to Halle (Saale) in just T-shirts.

Lufthansa subsidiary SWISS offers good value for money on its intra-European flights. Despite the stress of a short flight like this one from Zurich to Dresden, the cabin crew were very friendly and courteous. The selection of food and drinks is adequate for economy class.

Thank you so much for the wonderful report about Langkawi, which is also our next destination in Asia. SWISS is top-notch, even in Economy, as I recently experienced on a flight to JFK. Even the seats are comfortable, which is no longer a given in Economy these days of slimline seats and short seat cushions with minimal recline. And I really felt the Swiss friendliness in the professionalism and constant presence of the flight attendants – a real pleasure! So then: many more wonderful trips and always happy landings!

      Thank you for your comment!
We also always enjoy flying with SWISS. Especially on long-haul flights, their product is miles ahead of its big sister airline, Lufthansa.

We hope you have a great time on Langkawi!

I'm also trying to get the Avro again and had therefore booked a day trip to Zurich. After your description here, I wanted to see if I might have the chance to fly the C-Series after all, but (at the moment) a 777-300 is being used! :-) Not bad either.
