The four-star Hotel Hilton Mainz is located directly on the banks of the Rhine and borders on the picturesque old town. In 2012 it was extensively renovated. Thanks to a generous room upgrade, we spent the second weekend in July in a stylishly furnished junior suite with a view of the Rhine.
Booking, arrival and check-in
Due to a hailstorm on the Autobahn and a long traffic jam in front of the Theodor-Heuss Bridge, within sight of the hotel, we only arrived at the Hilton Mainz around 6:30 p.m. We parked our car in the hotel's underground car park and took the elevator up to the lobby. The underground car park also costs a considerable 22 EUR/day for hotel guests. Since this was too expensive for us, we later parked 100 meters further in Multi-storey car park Rathaus.
Check-in in the spacious lobby was pleasantly friendly, quick and professional. I had already completed the “paperwork” online using the Hilton app. So we got our upgrade to a junior suite with a king-size bed and river view 24 hours before arrival. Since there is no executive lounge in the Hilton Mainz, despite its considerable size, we received a drinks voucher for the “Weinstube” restaurant at the reception as a replacement.
Where is the Hilton Mainz located?
The Hilton Mainz is a larger hotel and is spread over two buildings. Our suite was in the Rhine wing and thus in the main building. This is connected to the cathedral wing on the other side of the street by a glass bridge on the first floor. In order to get from the cathedral wing to the restaurant or to the Rhine, a short walk is necessary. But the way to the beautiful old town of Mainz is not far.
How are the rooms (Junior Suite with King Size Bed and Rhine View) at the Hilton Mainz?
Our 66 m² junior suite was on the fifth floor. We found a spacious room that was visually separated into living and sleeping areas by columns and furniture. To the left of the entrance there was a wall unit with plenty of storage space, a safe and an ironing station. The hallway on the right leads to the large, renovated bathroom with a bathtub and a walk-in shower.
Viewed from the front door, the living area was on the left and the sleeping area was on the right of our junior suite. The 32-inch television with a swivel stand sat on a cabinet in the middle of the room. We were able to zap through the television program from both the king-size bed and the wine-red velvet couch. There was also an armchair and two loungers in the room. We also thought about the wooden cot for our son.
The supports, which were probably structurally necessary, were very well integrated into the room. For example, the air conditioning was located in the large support behind the 32-inch television. Because it faced the window front, the pleasantly cool air was not blown directly into the room. We also liked the individual combination of lighting and decorative elements. Smaller spots were used to create accents in various places.
There was a large desk with an ergonomic chair right next to the window. Even though it was the weekend, we used it to work on our travel blog. Fortunately, there was also a Nespresso machine with six coffee capsules so that we could “recharge” some energy while working. A huge plus point about our junior suite in the Hilton Mainz was the fantastic view of the Rhine. We stood at the window with our little son for a long time in the evening and watched the ships go by until he finally got tired and fell asleep.
How is breakfast at Hilton Mainz?
Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant “Weinstube” with a direct view of the Rhine. The restaurant offered enough space and thanks to several walls and decorative curtains, the atmosphere was pleasantly quiet despite the rush. Because of the nice weather, we looked for a place on the terrace on the banks of the Rhine. Feasting with a view of the Rhine and watching the numerous joggers along the promenade was terrific. It would be nice if smoking were finally banned outside as well. At least at breakfast you could put away the ashtrays.
We were surprised by the large selection of six different buffets. The variations of bread, rolls, pastries, full English breakfast items, cheese, sausage, fruit and yoghurt were considerable. Egg dishes were freshly prepared in the kitchen. I ordered my favorite dish again - Eggs Benedict - and was extremely pleasantly surprised. In quality and choice of ingredients, this variation surpassed that Hilton Viennaby lengths. In addition, fresh juices, sparkling wine and coffee specialties were served directly at the seat on request. Even the lukewarm soy milk for our son was no problem.
How is dinner at the Hilton Mainz?
The “Weinstube” restaurant is open from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. for an à la carte dinner. An all-inclusive buffet is also offered. Since we came back quite late from our trip on Saturday evening and still had a voucher for two drinks open anyway, we took a seat on the Rhine terrace. We each chose a burger from the two-page menu. Christin took “Der Mainzer” with 200g of juicy beef in a pretzel bun with fried apple rings, onions, bacon and cheddar. I opted for “Der Schweizer”, which was served with Gruyere, fried mushrooms, bacon and a fried egg. There was also a mix of fries, wedges and sweet potato fries. All in all a delicious end to the day.

Summary
The Hilton Mainz scores with a good location with a fantastic view of the Rhine. Thanks to the upgrade to a junior suite, we had enough space. We particularly liked the furnishings and design of the room. We missed a little spatial separation between the sleeping and living areas. The service and the breakfast offerings were very good. I haven't eaten such a delicious portion of Eggs Benedict for a long time. We can only recommend the Hilton Mainz for a weekend trip, but also as a stopover before departure at Frankfurt Airport.
