Singapore Airlines Boeing 747-400 Economy Class, Frankfurt to New York

Our aeroplane

Today we're finally off to the United States again, this time with Singapore Airlines! This time, however, it's just a city trip to New York City.

Published in early November Singapore Airlines a deal for 349 euros from Frankfurt to New York. Since I'd heard a lot about this airline's excellent service and had last visited New York in 2006, I booked on the spur of the moment.

The flight times are very convenient for a trip to New York. With a departure time of 8:30 a.m., Singapore Airlines is one of the first American flights leaving Frankfurt, and you arrive in New York before noon (local time). The downside is that we had to leave our hometown in Thuringia around 2 a.m. We parked the car in a parking garage 10 minutes away for just €22. We had hardly any wait time for the shuttle bus, and it only took us seven minutes to get to Terminal 1.

The plane, a Boeing 747-400, arrived half an hour late directly from Singapore. Pushback from the terminal was therefore not until 8:45 a.m. In addition to a menu for the flight, we were given a warm towel and an aperitif. There's nothing special to report about the amenities in economy class. The seats and interior furnishings are unfortunately a bit dated, but the spacing and legroom are sufficient. The in-seat entertainment offers several on-demand films and TV series. There's also a route map and several music channels to choose from. The monitors are of a sufficient size, but in direct sunlight, it's difficult to see anything on them. Unfortunately, the system failed at the beginning of the flight and could only be restarted after half an hour.

Breakfast

Breakfast service began about 45 minutes after takeoff and was a pleasant surprise. Even though "fried egg noodles with roasted pork and Chinese greens" seems a bit unusual in the morning, it was accompanied by a fruit plate, yogurt, an oven-fresh roll with jam, coffee, and orange juice.

Lunch

A good two hours before our landing in New York, a light snack was served. We had a choice of braised beef with mashed potatoes or roasted chicken with chili sauce, vegetables, and fragrant rice. I opted for the second main course. The starter was a pasta salad with shrimp, and for dessert, there was ice cream.

Despite a delay in Frankfurt, we landed on time in New York City (JFK). Thanks to our early arrival, it was still extremely quiet at International Terminal 5. We only had to wait 20 minutes at immigration. Afterwards, we took the AirTrain and the subway to the hotel. Overall, I was very impressed by Singapore Airlines Pleasantly surprised. The service was friendly. The food was delicious, and the drinks selection, including soft drinks, wine, beer, and even cocktails, was more than adequate.
