The sunny island of Usedom lives up to its name. We drove toward the Baltic Sea in the worst of the rain, and as soon as we crossed the bridge to the island, we were greeted by a bright blue sky and the sun smiling down on us. Perfect! That's how it should be.
At the start of our autumn road trip through southern Germany, we visited the Bavarian capital of Munich. As Christian is often in the city on business, he already knew some of the beautiful spots and finally wanted to show them to me. Until now, I had only ever driven past or through Munich on my way to a skiing holiday. So it was high time!
Munich Airport is Germany's second-largest airport. It has two parallel runways (South 26L/08R and North 26R/08L), which are used for takeoffs and landings depending on the wind direction. Due to the relatively large distance between the two runways, changing position during planespotting is often difficult. Typically, aircraft heading south or east are handled on the south runway.
Frankfurt Airport is the largest airport in Germany in terms of annual passenger numbers. Frankfurt currently has four runways. From the spotter's point of view, planespotting Frankfurt is particularly interesting due to the extensive cargo traffic and the many international passenger airlines and the two parallel runways (07L/25R and 07R/25L).
Berlin Brandenburg Airport "Willy Brandt," or BER for short, has been under construction since September 5, 2006, on the southern outskirts of Berlin in Schönefeld, Brandenburg. Whether and when it will ever open is still uncertain at this point. We're taking the opportunity for a unique tour of the airport grounds.
