American Airlines Business Class in der Boeing 777-300ER nach London

Room with a view

It's back to Oslo! In American Airlines Business Class in the Boeing 777-300ER we fly first to London Heathrow. The JFK Airport Train takes us from Jamaica Station to Terminal 8. American Airlines, Air Berlin and LATAM also fly from here.

Priority Check-in

In the departure area there is a large separate area for priority guests. Oneworld Sapphire, Emerald, Business Class and First Class check in here and drop off their luggage. There are very comfortable armchairs in the waiting area. So far I only know this from Thai Airways in Bangkok (although these are still at the counter).

After the security check, you more or less walk past the lounge entrance. We reach the lounge via an elevator. Business Class guests and Oneworld Sapphires go to the Admirals Club. Thanks to my top bonus platinum status, we're going to the Flagship Lounge.

American Airlines Flagship Lounge

We still have a lot of time before departure. We move into the last two free lounge chairs on the window front. Enjoying a drink with an umbrella in hand and the view of the apron, what more could a frequent flyer want? :-)

The Flagship Lounge is relatively small but has a good range of drinks, snacks and food. "First Class Lounge" is perhaps a little exaggerated though. In the course of the renovation work, however, the design and quality of the lounge will improve significantly. You'll have to be patient a little longer until the beginning of 2017. Freshly filled rolls are now available as a small snack in the early afternoon, and then a variety of warm dishes in the evening. I'm trying a few things out of curiosity. The quality fits.

There are only a few minutes left until boarding, but enough time to enjoy the view of Manhattan one last time and drink up in peace. By the way, in the far distance, on the Cargo Apron, is Iron Maiden's Ed Force One.

We only walk a few steps from the lounge to our gate. There, the first passengers are already queuing up and waiting for things to start. The first class is allowed to board first, then we follow. Our seat is in the larger part of the Business Class cabin. I'm nesting on 7A for the upcoming night flight.

We are greeted warmly. As an aperitif, you can choose from the usual: water, orange juice and champagne. The captain announces over the loudspeaker that our departure has been postponed a little because of the favorable tail winds. Since we would arrive in London well before the planned arrival time and landing is only allowed after 6:00 a.m. local time, we remain at the gate. So there is still enough time to take a close look at the excellent business class seat.

American Airlines Business Class in the Boeing 777-300ER – The seat

Thanks to the reverse herringbone arrangement, each seat has direct access to the aisle as well as maximum privacy and space. That's nice when you're traveling alone, but difficult when your wife and child are with you.

Still, this seat is awesome! There is plenty of storage space and the Bose Active Noise Canceling headphones are already hanging in a small closet. A small bottle of water is also available, which I find particularly good on a night flight. In addition to the two pre-installed levels (takeoff / sleep), the seat allows for a variety of adjustment options and the size of the table can also be varied as required.

If a mobile phone or laptop needs to be charged, it can easily be docked to the American, European and English plug-in systems. A USB port can also be found. The inflight entertainment can be controlled easily and logically with the remote control. The response time is very good.

The pushback begins and our triple seven makes its way towards the runway. The massive GE-90 howls and provides brilliant propulsion. The pilots turn left and we climb to our cruising altitude over Long Island and continue on course for Boston and north-east Canada.

The sun is slowly setting outside. My sundowner is gin and tonic, and there are warm nuts in a porcelain bowl to go with it. The meal is served after the aperitif. Like British Airways on the outbound flight, American gives you the opportunity to choose from five different main courses online before check-in.

Der Service – American Airlines Business Class

As a starter, American Airlines served Thai chicken with grilled pineapple and watermelon with mint dressing - a very nice summer dish. And a mixed salad with artichokes and grilled tomatoes, plus feta cheese. The main course consisted of a lime risotto, steamed halibut with sautéed tomato fennel and broccoli. The food is really a dream, the salad is fresh and crunchy, the fish is juicy. For dessert, I'm spoiled for choice: New York Chesecake or ice cream. After much hesitation, I decide on the ice cream. :-)

The film Everest is on during dinner. WiFi was available throughout the flight, but I didn't use it. When clearing away, I am asked whether I would like to have a hearty breakfast before landing or whether I would rather sleep as long as possible. Breakfast sounds good! Then it's time to see if the seat delivers what it promises. I make my bed for the night. With the earplugs from the amenity kit, I can actually sleep well for almost three hours.

We are now over Ireland and breakfast is being served. Again, there was a choice here. I opt for the fruit with yoghurt and granola. Unfortunately, that also means that we're about to land. The crew is already starting to clean up.

London is already within reach because we are starting with the holdings. As the captain promised, we land on time at London Heathrow Airport. A much too short, great flight comes to an end!

Summary

In July 2013, American Airlines took delivery of their new Boeing 777-300ER and equipped this aircraft with a premium business class product. For solo travelers it offers a high level of comfort and privacy. The food is great and the service American warm. If you have the chance to fly it, definitely do it!

Robert

Hi, I'm Robert and I've been infected by the flying virus since my first flight in 1993, in a Tupolev Tu-154. Chances of recovery are zero. Since I've been dealing with mileage programs even more intensively and am Topbonus Platinum and Star Alliance Gold, everything has gotten much worse. :-) Luckily for me, I have a very understanding family who are happy to share my passion with me and benefit from it. In the summer of 2015 we moved from Berlin to near Munich and now also have a great and above all functioning airport right on our doorstep. So there will be many more exciting trips and pictures, nice that you are there!

Was the text of this report translated from another language? Parts of it are difficult to understand and don’t make any sense.

We write our trip reports in German. We try to translate posts to English, but we don’t have enough time for it. Till the manual translation is done, we just offer automatic translate by the google translator. Sorry for that!
