Turkish Airlines Comfort Class in the Boeing 777-300ER to Los Angeles
The flight with Turkish Airlines Comfort Class in the Boeing 777-300ER was one of my first error fares. Thanks to this pricing error, I flew from Istanbul to Los Angeles in the comfortable Premium Economy of Turkish Airlines. Whether the detour to Istanbul was worthwhile, you will find out in the following trip report.
Flight to Frankfurt
My flight from Leipzig to Frankfurt was uneventful. For the small hunger in between there were only a few crackers and a drink. With a flight duration of 45 minutes this is not bad at all.
I arrived in Frankfurt at Terminal 1, in area A (Gate A26). From there we went by foot through the catacombs of the airport (aka “Tunnel of Horror”) to departure area B. Here I also met my fellow passenger Bodo at gate B20, who had travelled to Frankfurt by train. With some delay we took off after 22 o’clock with an almost new A321-200 (registration number D-AIDN) to Istanbul.
Flight to Istanbul
We were served a hot meal on board. We had beef goulash “Puerto Rico” with rice, peas and carrots. Plus a chocolate bar and finally something to drink – two cool blondes!
One night at Istanbul airport
The night in Istanbul was long and not really relaxing. We wondered, after our arrival, about the many people who were at the airport at this time of night. After some time we found out that these were delays because of a nuclear conference here in Istanbul. We tried to get some sleep in a café. But this did not really succeed. So at about 7 o’clock we decided to have an energy-rich breakfast, dinner and whatever else we wanted to eat at Burger King. I really don’t need a Whopper menu at this time of day again!
Around 10 o’clock we could finally check in after 8 hours waiting time. The passport control took their work very carefully and asked us a hundred questions about our entry to America. Annoying! It was not so clear to them why we fly via Istanbul to LA when it is so much shorter from Germany.
Turkish Airlines Comfort Class in the Boeing 777-300ER – boarding and take-off
The departure of flight TK 009 (Turkish Airlines) to Los Angeles was scheduled for 12:45. But at that time the machine was not even there. So we couldn’t leave the gate until 14:20, only to get stuck in a huge traffic jam. At least 25 planes were on the way to the runway in front of us. For the following two kilometers our pilot needed 1h25min – until at 15:45 finally the take-off clearance was given. Meanwhile our delay had already increased to three hours. The pilot said that on our northern route via Norway, Greenland and Canada we can gain about 1h of time again and thus arrive at a total flying time of only 12h30min.
Turkish Airlines Comfort Class in the Boeing 777-300ER – service
A menu was handed out shortly after the take-off. Three meals are planned in Comfort Class: Main course (plus canapés), snack and before landing a second course either cold or warm. After I had eaten the canapés and drank a Turkish beer there was a call for a doctor. A passenger in economy class probably didn’t seem to be doing so well. But fortunately it was not that bad – so we did not have to make an emergency landing.
The further flight was without any problems – with partly fantastic views of Greenland and the seemingly endless ice of Canada.
At 18:30 (local time) we arrived in Los Angeles and picked up our rental car. We could choose an SUV from a number of cars and decided on a white Ford Escape. For booking the rental car I can recommend the travel agency billiger-mietwagen.de. The costs and available tariffs are shown here very transparently.
