At the ITB travel trade fair, which ended last Sunday, Emirates unveiled its new Business Class. I was there and took a closer look.
Starting in November 2016, Emirates will install the new Business Class on all new Boeing 777-300ERs. Unfortunately, the cabin configuration remains unchanged at 2-3-2, below the industry average. This means that not every passenger has direct aisle access. While sitting next to each other, even in Business Class, can be a great advantage for families, it's actually a disaster for solo business travelers. With a high side wall in the headroom, Emirates at least creates enough privacy.
The materials used have a high-quality and elegant feel. The light wood paneling typical of Emirates has been reduced, and light colors have been used elsewhere. The seat and the fixed ottoman are covered in elegant gray leather. The seat in front features a recessed pocket for the menu, the onboard magazine, and other magazines. Above this is the 23-inch (approximately 58 cm) monitor.
Once you've settled into the quilted leather seat, you won't want to get up again. The upholstery is truly comfortable, making it perfectly suitable for long journeys. The seat can also be adjusted to lie completely flat and parallel to the floor. The permanently installed ottoman can be used as a footrest or seat extension for sleep mode.

On the side facing the middle seat, the personal minibar is installed at approximately knee height. There's additional storage space below. A large, single-piece table folds out from the center console. It feels very solid and stable. The only drawback is that it can't be moved. There's also a small, extendable table above the minibar for drinks.
A lamp is located above the shoulder, making it easy to read or work even in a dark cabin. Another feature of the seat is a tablet and a hand controller. These can be used to control the entertainment system and the seat. The tablet can be moved freely outside of the charging station. The hand controller is positioned somewhat awkwardly at shoulder height.
