Even before the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar Airways was a popular and well-known airline that is appreciated for its excellent service and comfort. We were therefore curious to see how the Qatar Airways Economy Class fared on our flight from Munich to Doha, with an onward flight to the Maldives. In the following review, you can find out what we thought of the seats, the amenities, the food and the flight as a whole.
- How did we book our flight?
- What should I keep in mind when checking in for flights to the Maldives?
- What is the cabin and seat like in Qatar Airways Economy Class on the Boeing 787-8?
- What is the inflight entertainment like in Qatar Airways Economy Class?
- What was available to eat and drink in Qatar Airways Economy Class?
How did we book our flight?
We booked our flight with Qatar Airways via the American Express Travel Service We booked this because it allowed us to use the annual travel credit of €200 with the American Express Platinum card. Since the American Express travel service is a type of travel agency, the flights are generally somewhat more expensive than those booked through the airline itself or various online portals, and are usually only worthwhile after deducting the travel credit. It's therefore a good idea to compare prices beforehand.
What should I keep in mind when checking in for flights to the Maldives?
Entry to the Maldives is possible for tourists with a booking confirmation for the entire duration of their stay. Visas are issued free of charge upon entry. However, each passenger requires an electronic entry declaration, which must be submitted on the Maldivian Border Authorities website must be completed. The resulting QR code will be verified during check-in at the departure airport.

What is the cabin and seat like in Qatar Airways Economy Class on the Boeing 787-8?
The Boeing 787-8's cabin has a sleek and modern design, with subdued lighting and ample storage space for carry-on luggage. The aircraft offers only two classes: 22 seats in Business Class and 232 seats in Economy Class. The Economy Class seats on Qatar Airways' Boeing 787-8 are arranged in a 3-3-3 configuration. We were assigned three seats along the left window side of the Boeing in row 25.

The comfortable seats are upholstered in a purple and red fabric pattern. We found the legroom to be a good amount for economy class. Each seat was also equipped with a USB port and a personal screen offering a wide selection of movies, TV shows, and games. A pillow and blanket were waiting for us at our seat. Both the pillow and blanket were very good for economy class. The pillow was firm, and the blanket was nice and thick.

What is the inflight entertainment like in Qatar Airways Economy Class?
Qatar Airways' ORYX ONE entertainment offering is truly remarkable. With more than 3,000 hours of on-demand entertainment, the selection of films and series is extensive. There are several current films, as well as classics like "Back to the Future." There's also a wide selection for children. There's also a great flight map with various views and plenty of information about the surrounding area. Rounding out the offering in ORYX ONE is a wide selection of games, from classics like Solitaire and Scrabble to more modern offerings like Angry Birds.
Tip: If you want to know which films are offered before your flight, just look at the Qatar Airways website and enter your flight route.

The Boeing 787-8 is also equipped with Wi-Fi. Economy Class passengers have the option of choosing the free messaging plan for one hour. Those needing more data can book the "Starter" plan for $5. This offers up to 30 MB and one hour of faster internet. The next plans cost $10 or $20 and offer internet access for three hours or for the entire flight.

What was available to eat and drink in Qatar Airways Economy Class?
Service began approximately 45 minutes after departure from Munich. Our son was first served his pre-ordered children's meal. The hot dish consisted of vegetables, tomato rice, and two pieces of breaded chicken. This was accompanied by a pasta salad, rolls, and various small sweets. A cream cake was served for dessert.

The standard menu in Qatar Airways Economy Class was very extensive. There was a choice of three dishes: chicken with rice, beef goulash, and fried noodles with tofu. I opted for the Hungarian beef goulash with mashed potatoes. The goulash was very good and really tender. The mashed potatoes had a somewhat odd color and consistency for me. It was accompanied by a potato salad and a kind of roll. For dessert, there was a cheesecake with berry topping on the tray.

The entire meal service was quick but not hectic, and drinks were offered several times. Throughout the rest of the flight, flight attendants frequently passed through the rows with various sweets and savory snacks.
The drinks selection was also very extensive for economy class. In addition to the usual soft drinks and water, beer and wine were offered, as well as various spirits, cocktails, and long drinks. So, after lunch, I had a gin and tonic made and immediately sat down to write this airline review.

Hello Christian,
Thanks for the great post. I'm flying to Bangkok in a few days and was looking for exactly this information.
Can you tell us anything about the airport? We have about a two-hour layover and could use some good tips.
Thank you in advance.
Kind regards from Hettstedt

Hello Frank,
Thanks for your comment below. Doha Airport is huge and offers many options for passing the time during your flight. If you don't have access to a lounge, a visit to "The Orchard" is worthwhile. The tropical garden with a water feature is home to 300 trees and 25,000 plants and is an inviting place to relax.
Have a good trip to Bangkok!
Hey Christian,
I just read that you were in row 25—right against the wall behind you and next to the restrooms. So my question is: Were the seats still fully reclinable/adjustable, and did the restrooms bother you in any way?
I'm still looking for the best spots. ;)
Thank you and best regards!

Hello Sinja,
That's true. We sat in row 25 AC, and the seats are along the wall facing the lavatory. However, the seat reclined as usual. The proximity to the lavatory didn't really bother us during the 6-hour daytime flight. However, it can be quite annoying on longer flights or at night. Otherwise, the seats are mostly the same, but please note: All A, C, D, F, H, and K seats may have limited legroom and under-seat storage due to the presence of an in-flight entertainment cabinet.
I wish you a pleasant journey!
