SWISS Economy Class Airbus A340-300 to Singapore

The plan was for us to land in Zurich at 4.30 pm, coming from Berlin. Due to the strong hurricane Niklas, we arrived three hours later. From Gate A81 we walked to the SWISS Senator Lounge before boarding the SWISS Economy Class Airbus A340-300 to Singapore.

Long lines had already formed at the transfer counter due to the numerous delays. Unfortunately, many passengers were unable to make their connecting flights. Niklas had caused chaos not only in Berlin, but throughout Europe.

SWISS Senator Lounge (Zurich)

The lounge has been remodeled since our last visit in September 2013. There are now smaller seating areas and larger tables with bar stools in the lower area. The upper buffet area remains unchanged.

The SWISS Senator Lounge in Zurich is home to the world's longest waited lounge bar. On previous visits, I've never even taken a look inside, so this time I pay it a quick visit. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a smoking bar, so after a quick photo, I return to the lounge.

We were disappointed with the food this time. The leek and potato soup was cold, the vegetable spaetzle was simply inedible, and the rest of the selection was rather limited. Even the Mövenpick ice cream had been eliminated. What a pity! So I treated myself to a non-alcoholic Feldschlösschen.

Ahead of us lay a 12-hour flight in economy class to Singapore. To freshen up, we used the shower cubicles in the lounge and then changed into comfortable sweatpants. Not quite so stylish, we then made our way to Satellite Terminal E. This is where all international flights leaving the Schengen area are processed. You get there on a small, self-propelled train – the Skymetro. Along the way, pay attention to the tunnel walls, as a short film is shown there – like the flipbook of old.

Arriving at Gate E34, I asked one last time about a possible upgrade to business class. I'd already seen at check-in that economy was fully booked, so we still had hope. Unfortunately, both business and economy were completely full.

What is the cabin and seat like in the SWISS Economy Class Airbus A340-300?

Thanks to our Star Alliance Gold status, we were among the first to board and found the economy section empty. Today, we sat in seats 31J and K in the rear and last economy compartment. The SWISS Economy Class Airbus A340-300 is configured in a 2-4-2 configuration except for the last four rows. Due to the narrower fuselage, the last four rows are only configured in a 2-3-2 configuration.

What is available to eat and drink in SWISS Economy Class Airbus A340-300?

After boarding ended at 10:45 p.m., the menus were distributed. The choices were chicken and vegetable paella. Service began shortly after reaching cruising altitude. Christin had the paella, and I tried the chicken. Both were OK—nothing more, nothing less. As a nightcap after the meal, I had a vodka and coke. Unfortunately, they only serve Smirnoff on board.

A movie and a good five hours of sleep later, we woke up shortly after leaving the Indian mainland. Now we had only a good three hours and 45 minutes left. About 1,400 kilometers from Singapore, the lights on board were turned back on, and we were given a warm towel to cool off.

Breakfast was served in the middle of the Strait of Malacca, 1 hour and 30 minutes before arriving in Singapore. When I studied the menu that evening, I was disappointed to find scrambled eggs. I'd never had edible scrambled eggs on an airplane before. But I tried them anyway and was more than pleasantly surprised – delicious, and with the croquettes and asparagus, a great combination. It was served with fruit salad, yogurt, a roll, coffee, and a Tetra Pak of orange juice. I haven't held a sachet of water in at least 5-6 years.

After breakfast, we prepared for our arrival in Singapore. Our amenity kit included a toothbrush, various creams, and deodorant. After freshening up, we put our sweatpants back on. That's not so easy in an airplane restroom.

The first thing we noticed on approach to Singapore were the many container ships waiting outside the port to finally be unloaded. After an uneventful landing, the pilot stopped the A340-300 at Gate E4 at 4:49 p.m., about 30 minutes earlier than scheduled.

After a smooth entry process without any long waits, we were able to collect our luggage immediately. Unfortunately, we missed the hotel shuttle to the Grand Mercure Roxy by 10 minutes and had to wait 50 minutes. Information about the shuttle bus and a small hotel sticker can be obtained at the Ground Transportation desk on the arrivals level.

Swiss is doing a really good job. They'll definitely offer an alternative for future flights. When will the new lounge at Dock E open?

I think the lounge in E will open at the end of this year.
