In May 2022, I visited the Bulgarian capital Sofia for a weekend trip. I chose the Hilton Sofia as my hotel and was curious to see what to expect as a status guest at this five-star hotel. In this review, I will focus specifically on the hotel's rooms and breakfast.
Booking, arrival and check-in
I booked the hotel for around €100 per night through the Hilton website. Only by booking through them do I receive the status benefits and bonus points for the nights. Furthermore, the price is usually not cheaper through the various other booking portals.
The main purpose of my trip to Sofia was to renew my Miles&Bonus frequent flyer status. So I flew with Aegean Airlines from Düsseldorf via Athens to Sofia. From the international airport, I took the metro to the Bulgarian Army Stadium and walked the last few meters along Bulgaria Boulevard to the hotel. Upon arriving at the Hilton Sofia, a rather functional building from the outside, I was already expected at reception in the large lobby. I was informed that the hotel was currently undergoing extensive renovations and that some areas were therefore closed. I also received an upgrade from my booked King Room to a King Executive Room on one of the upper floors.

Where is the Hilton Sofia located?
The Hilton Sofia enjoys a prime location in the heart of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. It is situated directly on the famous Boulevard Bulgaria, one of the city's main thoroughfares. Sofia International Airport is a 15-minute taxi ride away. The hotel also offers easy access to major tourist attractions, such as the National Palace of Culture and Sofia's historic center, as well as shopping malls and business districts. Overall, the Hilton Sofia's location is ideal for both business and leisure travelers wishing to explore Sofia.

What are the rooms (King Executive Room) like at the Hilton Sofia?
The King Executive Rooms at the Hilton Sofia are spacious and comfortable, offering a higher level of comfort and amenities. The rooms feature a king-size bed with premium linens, a glass desk, an armchair, a small flat-screen TV, a minibar, a safe, and tea and coffee making facilities. While the decor showed signs of age, the hotel was undergoing renovations during my stay, and the rooms should be updated soon. The bathrooms are equipped with a shower and a bathtub, a hairdryer, and complimentary toiletries. Despite the age of the rooms, everything was very clean and well-maintained.

As a guest in an Executive Room or with Diamond status, I should have had access to the hotel's Executive Lounge. There, I would have enjoyed complimentary breakfast, refreshments, and snacks. Unfortunately, this lounge was also closed or undergoing renovations during my stay. As compensation, I was allowed to take some items from the minibar. I found it interesting that the minibar contained more than just food.

What is the breakfast like at the Hilton Sofia?
Breakfast is served in the hotel's restaurant on the second floor. The room is large and offers ample space. However, the sound of conversations at neighboring tables is not muffled, so it was quite noisy even with the few guests during my stay. The staff was very quick, friendly, and attentive. I was asked several times if everything was alright or if I would like another cappuccino.

The selection of food was very good in terms of quantity. There were typical hot breakfast dishes such as scrambled eggs, beans, bacon, salads, various pastries, and desserts. I particularly enjoyed the Bulgarian specialties like banitsa, a filo pastry filled with brined cheese or quark. So, during my short stay, I also got to experience some traditional cuisine. However, the quality was sometimes very poor.
