Hilton Mainz - Four-star hotel directly on the banks of the Rhine

The four-star Hilton Mainz hotel is located directly on the banks of the Rhine, bordering the picturesque old town. It underwent extensive renovations in 2012. Thanks to a generous room upgrade, we spent the second weekend of July in a stylishly furnished junior suite with a view of the Rhine.

Booking, arrival and check-in

Due to a hailstorm on the highway and a lengthy traffic jam in front of the Theodor-Heuss Bridge, within sight of the hotel, we didn't arrive at the Hilton Mainz until around 6:30 PM. We parked our car in the hotel's underground garage and took the elevator up to the lobby. The underground garage costs a hefty €22 per day, even for hotel guests. Since this was too expensive for us, we parked later 100 meters away in the Town Hall Parking GarageHere we paid only 15 euros per day. Paying with a debit card or credit card also saves 10 percent of the parking fee. This meant we paid 1.50 euros less and received additional miles thanks to the Miles & More credit card.

Check-in in the spacious lobby was pleasantly friendly, quick, and professional. I had already completed the paperwork online using the Hilton app. So, just 24 hours before arrival, we received an upgrade to a junior suite with a king-size bed and a river view. Since the Hilton Mainz doesn't have an executive lounge, despite its considerable size, we received a drink voucher for the "Weinstube" restaurant at reception as a substitute.

Where is the Hilton Mainz located?

The Hilton Mainz is a larger hotel spread across two buildings. Our suite was located in the Rhine wing, the main building. This is connected to the Cathedral wing across the street by a glass bridge on the first floor. Getting from the Cathedral wing to the restaurant and the Rhine requires a short walk. However, the walk to Mainz's beautiful old town is not far.

What are the rooms like (Junior Suite with King-size bed and Rhine view) at the Hilton Mainz?

Our 66 m² junior suite was on the fifth floor. We found a spacious room, visually separated into living and sleeping areas by columns and furniture. To the left of the entrance was a wall unit with plenty of storage space, a safe, and an ironing station. The hallway to the right led to the large, renovated bathroom with a bathtub and walk-in shower.

From the entrance door, the living area was on the left and the sleeping area on the right of our Junior Suite. The 32-inch TV with a swivel stand sat on a cabinet in the middle of the room. This allowed us to channel surf from both the king-size bed and the burgundy velvet couch. There was also an armchair and two daybeds in the room. A wooden crib for our son had also been included.

The supports, presumably necessary for structural reasons, were very well integrated into the space. For example, the air conditioning unit was located in the large support behind the 32-inch television. Because it faced the window, the pleasantly cool air wasn't blown directly into the room. We also appreciated the unique combination of lighting and decorative elements. Smaller spotlights were used to create accents in various places.

Right by the window was a large desk with an ergonomic chair. Even though it was the weekend, we used it to work on our travel blog. Luckily, there was also a Nespresso machine with six coffee capsules to help us recharge while we worked. A huge plus point of our junior suite at the Hilton Mainz was the stunning view of the Rhine. We stood at the window with our young son for a long time in the evening, watching the ships pass by, until he finally got tired and fell asleep.

What is breakfast like at the Hilton Mainz?

Breakfast is served in the hotel's "Weinstube" restaurant, which offers a direct view of the Rhine. The restaurant offered ample space, and thanks to several walls and decorative curtains, the atmosphere was pleasantly quiet despite the crowds. However, due to the beautiful weather, we chose a spot on the terrace on the banks of the Rhine. Feasting with a view of the Rhine and watching the numerous joggers along the riverside promenade was magnificent. It would be nice if smoking were finally banned outside as well. At least at breakfast, the ashtrays could be removed.

We were surprised by the large selection of six different buffets. The variety of bread, rolls, pastries, elements of the English breakfast, cheese, sausage, fruit, and yogurt was impressive. Egg dishes were freshly prepared in the kitchen. I ordered my favorite dish again—eggs Benedict—and was extremely pleasantly surprised. In terms of quality and selection of ingredients, this variation surpassed the Hilton Vienna by a mile. Fresh juices, sparkling wine, and coffee specialties were also served directly to our seats upon request. Even lukewarm soy milk for our son was no problem.

What is dinner like at the Hilton Mainz?

The "Weinstube" restaurant is open for à la carte dinner from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., but they also offer an all-inclusive buffet. Since we returned quite late from our excursion on Saturday evening and still had a voucher for two drinks left, we sat down on the Rhine terrace. We each chose a burger from the two-page menu. Christin had the "Der Mainzer" (The Mainzer), featuring 200g of juicy beef in a pretzel bun with fried apple rings, onions, bacon, and cheddar cheese. I opted for the "Der Schweizer" (The Swiss), which was served with Gruyère cheese, fried mushrooms, bacon, and a fried egg. It was accompanied by a mix of fries, wedges, and sweet potato fries. All in all, a delicious end to the day.

The Hilton Mainz boasts a great location with a stunning view of the Rhine. Thanks to the upgrade to a junior suite, we had plenty of space. We particularly liked the room's furnishings and design. We did miss a bit of separation between the bedroom and living areas. The service and the breakfast selection were very good. I haven't had such a delicious portion of eggs Benedict in a long time. We highly recommend the Hilton Mainz for a weekend getaway, but also as a stopover before departing from Frankfurt Airport.
