Highway No. 1: El Matador Beach und Planespotting LAX

Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 - MSN 37839 - D-ABYP

Our drive took us through the hills outside Los Angeles, from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library always along Highway No. 23. Here, especially the last part just before the coast, you need a strong stomach. The switchbacks are not to be underestimated! You can find yesterday's post, where we drove Highway No. 1 from Morro Bay to Simi Valleyhere.

El Matador Beach – Park Entrance (Highway No. 1)

Our goal was the El Matador Beach. Unfortunately, the parking lot directly on the cliff is not free, but you can easily park along Highway No. 1 on the side of the road. The few meters of walking along the highway are no problem and less dangerous than you think. Then we go down the wooden steps on the cliffs to the beautiful sandy beach.

Here you can see very well how the coast is slowly being eroded by the sea. Some demolition remains, half standing in the water, form small caves and grottoes. The sun was shining from the blue sky, but the water was still quite cool. We only went in up to our ankles.

Under one of the rock formations, a model lolled, who was constantly ordered by the photographer into other poses. It's very exciting to watch how such a shoot goes.

We walked up and down the beach a bit and watched the birds on and in the water. If you have enough time, you can spend a great day at the beach here.

Back at the car we decided to drive through the middle of L.A. and on the LAX to eat burgers while watching airplanes. So let's get into the fray.

When we arrived at the In-N-Out, we had to wait quite a long time for our order. But it was also full. It's just pretty popular, because what could be better than burgers and airplanes! ;) We sat out in the sun with the camera always at the ready.

Drive to San Diego – Highway No. 1

Satiated from eating and watching airplanes, we continued towards San Diego. The traffic jams were really bad, it took us forever to get out of L.A. The drive continued along Highway No. 1 through beautiful coastal towns and then onto Interstate 5. From here on, the route unfortunately became quite monotonous and boring, which was probably due to the military area we drove through. The only highlight were the oil rigs off the Pacific coast that could be seen in the distance. Certainly not the view you want from your beach house, but quite interesting for us, because we don't know that from Germany so close to the coast. Actually, we wanted to go to Balboa Park in San Diego today, but it was getting later and later and slowly dark.

Are you still looking for a suitable hotel in San Diego?

You can find a hotel that suits your budget through the various online travel agencies such as Agoda,Booking.com,ebookers.de,Expedia,Hotels.com,lastminute.de, otel.com or Venere.com.

Our hotel for this night is the La Quinta Inn & Suites San Diego Mission Bay. A recently renovated hotel, pretty much right on the interstate, but still quiet. The room is large enough and everything is super clean.

Christin

Hello, I am a Christian and grew up in magical Merseburg. During my studies in Erfurt, I met my husband, Christian, and we moved to Halle together. With our small family we now live again in my original hometown. Because of my job as an architect, I am always interested in places with an exciting history and great architecture. I was already often on the road during my studies, but my great passion for travel only spilled over from my husband to me. My motto: "The way is the goal!" For us, a relaxed holiday begins at the airport... in the lounge. :-)
