Langkawi: Mount Raya

Blick vom Gunung Raya

Blick on Gunung Raya

Actually only because of an “Earthcache” type geocache we drove to the 890 m high Gunung Raya. Gunung Raya is the highest mountain on the Malaysian island of Langkawi. Even the 20-minute serpentine path up offered all sorts of attractions along the roadside: cows, monkeys, iguanas and the deep green jungle to the left and right. Really great!

To reach the top of Gunung Raya, you can either take a taxi or rent a car. We drove with our rental car (Tip: Rental car on Langkawi) the winding street Jalan Gunung Raya, which starts at the intersection with Jalan Ulu Melaka.

At the top we found a lookout tower. But since the weather was very hazy and we could already hear a thunderstorm nearby, we saved the 10 MYR per person for the entrance fee. The view from the parking lot is really worth it.

In the parking lot we noticed the sign “Welcome to D’Coconut Hill Resort”. So there was also a hotel next to the observation tower? We could hardly imagine who would want to spend their vacation here so far away from "civilization". In addition, the buildings didn't really look well maintained and almost spooky. The hotel reviews on TripAdvisor then confirmed our assumption.
