    Booking, arrival and check-in<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    We booked our trip to the "Ocean Riviera Paradise" in Playa del Carmen as a package tour with flights and hotel together with Christin's parents and her brother and his family. This was a convenient solution that didn't require us to worry about anything. After landing with Condor in Cancun<\/a> We had to wait another half hour for the arranged bus, which took us to the resort with an additional stop. The journey was pleasant as night fell. We were full of anticipation and just wanted to arrive quickly, unpack, and start our vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But it was precisely at this point that we were abruptly stopped. Instead of a smooth start in the huge lobby, we were greeted by an extremely slow check-in. Only two employees were available for all arriving guests \u2013 this is simply incomprehensible for a five-star resort. After the long journey with tired children and the desire to finally get to our hotel rooms, we had to wait in line for almost an hour. The mood quickly changed: Instead of arriving relaxed on vacation, we felt like we were stuck in an endless queue. A truly frustrating start that desperately needs improvement!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We were pleasantly surprised by the access system, however. Instead of the usual room cards, we were given differently colored wristbands that served as room keys. This was convenient, as we always had the key with us and never had to search for it. However, a disadvantage quickly became apparent: children under 14 were not given wristbands. This made it impossible to send our son to his room alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Where is Ocean Riviera Paradise located?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The Ocean Riviera Paradise is located directly on the coast of the Riviera Maya in Playa del Carmen. The resort is located on the beachfront, but a neighboring hotel is within easy reach. The lively downtown area of Playa del Carmen, with its shopping streets, restaurants, and nightlife, is approximately six kilometers away and can be reached quickly by resort shuttle or taxi. Canc\u00fan International Airport is approximately 50 kilometers away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What are the rooms like at Ocean Riviera Paradise?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The Ocean Riviera Paradise is divided into different areas, offering the perfect environment for every guest: from the family area with a children's pool to the exclusive "adults-only" area to the Privileged Suites, which are specifically marketed by the hotel. We booked a Junior Suite in the family area for our stay. Thanks to the convenient location, we reached both the restaurants and the children's pool in just a few minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Our junior suite was located on the fourth floor and offered a tranquil view of the rainforest. However, the neighboring hotel was also visible in the distance. Upon entering the room, the immediate attention was drawn to the spacious built-in closet, which, in addition to a safe, offered ample storage space with compartments, drawers, and clothes rails. To the left of the hallway was the bathroom, which seemed surprisingly spacious for a family resort. It featured a bathtub with a whirlpool function, a separate shower, a separate toilet, and a double sink with plenty of counter space. Various amenities were also provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The bedroom and living area were pleasantly large and clearly laid out. Next to the comfortable king-size bed was a sideboard with a minibar restocked daily, including soft drinks and two cans of Mexican beer. A television hung on the wall above it, and at the back of the room were a sofa that converted into a bed, a large desk, a coffee table, and an armchair. On the balcony, two metal chairs and a relaxing view of the greenery awaited us. We were glad we didn't get a room facing the pool, as the water park with slides is considerably busier there during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Our verdict on the Junior Suite: The size and layout were ideal for a 14-day vacation with children. While some of the furniture was showing its age, it was clean and functional. Above all, the quiet and spaciousness of the room impressed us and allowed us to enjoy our stay in a relaxed manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What is breakfast like at Ocean Riviera Paradise?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Breakfast is served in the main buffet restaurant, "Amaranto," which is accessible via two entrances. To better manage the large number of guests, the hotel opens the entrances at staggered times. However, during peak times, long lines formed, as each family was escorted to a table individually. At our table, the wait staff took care of our drinks, bringing us coffee, water, and juice directly to our tables; we got everything else from the buffet. The dining room itself was a real eye-catcher: With its Mediterranean flair, it was reminiscent of a cross between a market hall and a warehouse, and featured seating areas of varying sizes. A nice detail was the cloth napkins at every meal. Unfortunately, the restaurant was very noisy due to the large number of guests and the architecture, which somewhat spoiled the otherwise charming impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The buffet itself left little to be desired. It was divided into various stations, which were well signposted, making it easy to get an overview. The smoothie bar, where you could have a fresh smoothie made from a variety of fruits and vegetables, was particularly impressive. There was also plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as an English breakfast corner with bacon, sausages, and beans. The selection of baked goods was extensive, and at the two omelet stations you could have fresh egg dishes prepared, although there were sometimes lines. A real highlight for us was the Mexican breakfast offering with quesadillas and fresh chilaquiles with salsa roja or salsa verde, garnished with cheese, herbs, and a choice of egg or chicken. Many of the dishes were prepared right in front of the guests, which added to the special appeal of the buffet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Those who wanted could even start the morning with a glass of sparkling wine, a mimosa, or a Bloody Mary. The coffee, however, was less impressive: There was no fully automatic machine, only classic filter coffee. After about seven days, the buffet offerings became repetitive, but this didn't bother us at breakfast. Overall, the breakfast was impressive due to its abundance, variety, and fresh preparation. Only the noise and waiting times during peak hours somewhat marred the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What are the restaurants like at Ocean Riviera Paradise?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The Ocean Riviera Paradise is a pure all-inclusive resort, and the selection of restaurants and bars spread throughout the complex is accordingly extensive. The centerpiece is the Amaranto buffet restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In the evenings, changing themed buffets are offered, featuring classics such as pasta, fish, and meat dishes. While the menu tends to repeat itself after a week, the variety ensures that everyone is sure to find something to suit their taste. Drinks are always served at your table as part of the all-inclusive package, and the staff is usually happy to accommodate special requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The resort also offered several themed restaurants that provided variety. At "Sakura," we experienced a lively teppanyaki dinner, while at "Route 66," we enjoyed an American barbecue atmosphere \u2013 except for the chipboard roof panels, it felt surprisingly authentic. There were also a classic steakhouse, a Mexican, and an Italian restaurant. Guests with a Privilege room, a category for which an additional charge applies, also had access to a separate restaurant. There was also another exclusive restaurant for adults. A real highlight for us was the charming Mike's Caf\u00e9, which looked like a miniature Starbucks copy. In addition to specialty coffees, it also offered a small but fine selection of sandwiches, donuts, and sweet pastries \u2013 the perfect place to start the day in a relaxed manner. Right next door, an ice cream parlor beckoned in the evening, which was popular with both young and old and provided a sweet end to the day. We were very pleased that all these restaurants, snacks, and caf\u00e9s were included in the all-inclusive package. We have never experienced this to this extent in any other hotel before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Of course, the bars were also a must. There were several venues throughout the resort, serving a wide selection of cocktails and long drinks \u2013 from margaritas and daiquiris to tequila shots. We particularly appreciated the use of reusable hard plastic cups in the pool areas, while drinks were served in real glasses in the other areas. The cocktail menus offered a wide selection, including premium spirits. The service staff was always attentive and brought us drinks not only to the restaurant but often directly to our loungers by the pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What does Ocean Riviera Paradise offer for relaxation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The Ocean Riviera Paradise complex offered numerous relaxation options, whether traveling as a family, a couple, or alone. The numerous pools spread throughout the resort were particularly eye-catching. For younger guests, there was a large children's and family pool with an integrated water park, which was especially popular with the kids. Those preferring something quieter could use one of the more exclusive pools. These were either reserved for Privilege guests or accessible for an additional charge as part of the El Besos (adults-only) program. There was also a larger family pool, where numerous activities and music were offered throughout the day, as well as a pool right on the beach. Some pools had swim-up bars, so we could easily enjoy our drinks from the water. The number of loungers was sufficient overall, although we would have appreciated more parasols. At the family pool, it was also noticeable that the loungers were a bit worn. Unfortunately, there were no cushions, which we would have expected in a five-star hotel. On the positive side, however, the staff always made an effort to maintain order and provide drinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The resort also has its own small beach area with loungers and umbrellas. This area was secured with large fabric bags to prevent sand from erosion, making access to the water somewhat difficult. Unfortunately, we were barely able to use the beach during our stay because the Sargassum (brown algae) made swimming in the sea virtually impossible. Although the hotel deployed numerous staff members who tirelessly tried to remove the algae, with considerable physical effort, it ultimately amounted to fighting windmills. This algae problem affected not only the resort but large parts of the Mexican Caribbean coast. It is a recurring natural phenomenon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In addition to the pools and beach, the resort offered numerous other activities: a kids' and teens' club kept younger guests entertained, while adults found peace and relaxation in the spa area. Active guests could use a small gym with an outdoor area and three tennis courts. The small electric minibuses that regularly shuttled between the beach and the lobby were particularly convenient, making even longer journeys within the extensive complex no problem. But there was also plenty to do beyond sports and relaxation. In the evenings, the large theater hosted a variety of shows and live performances. Those looking for a more sociable experience could enjoy the major sports broadcasts with a drink in the sports bar or play a game of billiards. Another real highlight was the on-site bowling alley, which provided plenty of fun and variety for both children and adults. With the exception of the spa area, all activities were included in the all-inclusive package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
