Long live Vegas!

Las Vegas Strip

More than 35 million visitors are drawn to the gambling metropolis of Las Vegas every year. But this city is not only about gambling, a variety of attractions, world-famous shows and sporting events make Las Vegas an unforgettable holiday.

Shopping at the Las Vegas Outlet Center

Since we left Los Angeles quite late, we had little time left in Las Vegas. We stopped at the Las Vegas Outlet Center to get a few things. A few shops later and several dollars poorer, we made our way to the hotel.

Las Vegas: Luxor Hotel and Casino

I had received a voucher for 50 GBP (no minimum spend) at an English internet travel agency. So I booked us a room at the Luxor Hotel and Casino for the equivalent of 4 EUR. Our room was on the first floor of the pyramid and we had a sloping outer wall with a window. As is typical in Vegas, no matter where you want to go, you inevitably have to walk through the casino.

Las Vegas Boulevard and Fountains of Bellagio

We left the hotel and walked north on Las Vegas Boulevard, better known as the "Strip". The many neon signs and pompous buildings are still very impressive on my second visit. The water shows (Fountains of Bellagio) at the Hotel Bellagio are always beautiful. Some of the fountains shoot up to 75 meters high to the music or can move to create "dancing" jets of water. The shows take place several times an hour daily between 3 pm and 12 am.

Las Vegas: $5 Blackjack at Casino "New York, New York"

Of course, even after the successes in Macau, we wanted to try our luck in blackjack. We found four tables in the casino "New York, New York" with a minimum bet of only $5 per game. Without going into further detail – it could have gone better.

Breakfast at IHOP

As we exceptionally did not have breakfast included in this hotel, we went to an IHOP restaurant the next morning. As the name – International House of Pancakes – suggests, there is a typical American breakfast speciality here – the pancake. In the menu there are a variety of ways to eat it, including fruit. I opted for a New York cheesecake pancake with strawberries and whipped cream. Very tasty, but the portion was not manageable.

Hoover Dam

With a full stomach we left Las Vegas heading south. About 40 miles out is the Hoover Dam. This 180-meter-tall structure impounds the Colorado River to form Lake Mead, separating the states of Nevada and Arizona.

In order to relieve the traffic bottleneck, a bridge has been built in recent years as a bypass for the U.S. 93. From this bridge we had a great view of the dam.
